The $395 Billion Industry: Why Universities Still Don’t Teach Students About It!

🎓 The Gap in our Education system today
Across Africa, over 11 million young people graduate from universities and colleges every year (World Bank, 2023). Yet according to the African Development Bank, over 75% struggle to find decent jobs.
Here’s part of the reason: our universities teach how to create simple tools, but not how to own systems.
I’ve met countless young graduates from Kenya’s and South Sudan’s best universities who can design beautiful websites. They know HTML, CSS, even some JavaScript. But when I ask the simplest question — “Where will you host this website so the world can see it?” — most are silent.

They point me to Bluehost, GoDaddy, HostGator, or SiteGround — but almost none of them own a server themselves. That means while they design websites for clients, they hand over the most profitable part — hosting — to someone else.
And that’s the missing piece universities don’t want to teach you: the web hosting business model that can uplift our youth and communities.

💡 My Realization: Stop Making Others Rich
When I first discovered web hosting in 2022, it felt like finding a hidden treasure.
Think about it:
- If a hosting company charges $10/month per client, that’s:
- 10 clients = $100/month = $1,200/year
- 100 clients = $1,000/month = $12,000/year
- 1,000 clients = $10,000/month = $120,000/year
This isn’t theory. Look at the big players: Bluehost, HostGator, SiteGround, DreamHost. They all built billion-dollar companies by charging small amounts to millions of customers. Even in Kenya you will find very few companies that are rising to the roof because of this advantage.

Every time a developer builds a website and sends the client to one of these companies, they’re making someone else a millionaire.
That’s when I decided: if I can design websites, why not also host them? Why not provide the full solution? That decision changed my business — and my life.
🛠 Why Hosting Is a Game-Changer
Owning hosting doesn’t just mean extra revenue. It means:
- Recurring Income – Unlike one-time design fees, hosting brings in money every month.
- Client Loyalty – When you control hosting, you’re the first call when your client needs help.
- End-to-End Solutions – Clients don’t want 10 vendors; they want one trusted partner.
- Scalability – As more people build websites (and AI tools make it even easier), the demand for hosting grows every single day.
And here’s the kicker: AI will not replace hosting.
AI can design a website in minutes. But every website — whether built by a refugee youth in Kakuma or a billion-dollar company in Silicon Valley — still needs a “home” online. That home is hosting.

🌍 How it all started!
When I started in 2018, I was just building websites like many other youth in Africa. All was good until I had designed 13 websites for small businesses with no tech background.
By 2022, I realized hosting was the missing piece. I invested in my first server to support nonprofits in Northern Kenya, especially in Kakuma Refugee Camp.
Within six months, I had designed and hosted 30 websites. Those websites gave thousands of refugees and community organizations a platform to share their stories, attract donors, and grow.
By 2023, I expanded into nine East African countries. By 2025, I incorporated Best Digital Ninjas as a U.S. company — giving me the freedom to scale globally.
The secret? I stopped handing over my goldmine to others. I kept hosting in-house.
📊 The Market Proof
- Over 900,000 new websites are launched every single day. (Internet Live Stats, 2025)
- 43% of the internet runs on WordPress — meaning millions of sites need hosting, updates, and backups. (WPBeginner, 2025)
- Global web hosting market is projected to reach $395 billion by 2030. (Grand View Research, 2024)
The demand is endless. The question is whether you’ll own a piece of it, or keep making someone else rich.
🌱 It’s Not About the Money — It’s About What Hosting Makes Possible
When people first hear about the hosting business, they often focus on the income potential — the recurring revenue, the billions in market value. But here’s the truth: the real value is not money, it’s empowerment.
Think about it: every website hosted is more than files on a server. It’s:
- A community-based organization in Kakuma finally able to share its story with the world.
- A youth entrepreneur in Nairobi launching their first e-commerce shop.
- A refugee-led initiative reaching global donors through an online platform.
- A local business in Juba finding new customers beyond their neighborhood.
Hosting gives people a digital “home” — a place where their voice, ideas, and solutions can live, grow, and reach others.
When I invested in my own server in 2022, I wasn’t just thinking of profits. I was thinking of the nonprofits and small businesses I had seen struggle without an online presence. Within six months, I had hosted 30 websites, and each of those sites became a window to opportunity for thousands of people.
Yes, recurring revenue is nice. But what really matters is this: hosting gives the voiceless a voice and the invisible visibility. That’s something no paycheck alone can deliver.
🚀 Why You need to Start Now
Every year you wait, more companies fill the space. Just like in any gold rush, those who start early gain the advantage.
And here’s the best part: you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You don’t need millions of dollars. I started my hosting business from a refugee camp, with a single server, and scaled step by step.
Today, I mentor young developers and freelancers to do the same.
🎯 Final Word
Many universities give you the skills to create websites. But they rarely teach you how to own the web hosting system. And that’s the real secret to creating your time freedom in the digital age.
If you’re a developer, designer, or freelancer, don’t just build websites. Host them. Maintain them. Own the value chain.
That’s how I turned my skills into a business that now empowers hundreds of thousands of people across Africa and beyond. And it’s how you can too.
